8th Lesson - How to create ocean ripples with oil paint

Now the canvas is dry, we can put in some distant ripples, starting from the horizon.  With a mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Cadmium Red Light we can dot and dash across the water.  Make the marks darker in the shadows and lighter in the middle of the canvas where the sun is shining.  We are only doing this down to the first big dark wave.  Then we can dab in the highlights with a clean brush using a mixture of Cadmium Yellow Deep and a dot of Red Gold and white.  Try not to mix it into your wet purple marks yet - when you have finished, you can then lightly blend the marks in together so that they are very soft and out-of-focus to give the painting distance.  Doing it this way will prevent the colours from going green and muddy.
