How To Create Realistic Folds In Material
As the folds of material come out towards you, the lighter they get. These highlights are bright, clean colours. Where the material is creased, it is the darkest and a shadow colour is used. I usually add Ultramarine Blue and a dot of Cadmium Red to the original material colour for these dark shadows. For the middle tones where the material is rounded out towards the highlight, you need to add more of your original material colour to your dark mix with a touch of white. Remember to keep feathering it off so it is nice and soft with no hard edges - even the creases need to be fairly soft.
